Ryan Bingham, played by George Clooney, travels thousands of miles each week to fire people from their jobs. He doesn't appear to have a heart or soul when it comes to delivering the devastating news to people that they are "being let go." He loves his life as a single, obnoxious and completely unattached man and has no desire to marry or have kids.
Meanwhile, changes are happening at the company Ryan works for, in the form of very young and highly educated Natalie,(Anna Kendrick) who persuades the company that it would be much more cost effective to switch to firing people over a live internet hookup rather than sending reps flying to each city to perform the task, along with their hefty expense counts.
Around the same time, enter Alex, played by Vera Farmiga, who is as equally free spirited and adept at flying and car renting, hoteling and eating out in strange cities as Alex. Naturally, they hit it off, start an affair and we can see where this is going. Will Ryan, ever the bachelor, be seduced into a long term relationship complete with 3.4 kids and a dog?
A wedding is thrown into the mix, perhaps to boost the point that Ryan needs to come around, come to his senses and become a family man. There was really no point to this wedding, other than to display a wedding as a happy and momentous occasion, one which Ryan, if he doesn't change his ways, will never have a memory of.
Yawn. During a momentary lapse of reason, we see Ryan uncharacteristically leave a speaking engagement, of which he is the speaker, to chase the dream that he suddenly realizes he's missing out on, but if backfires. We're left with the same Ryan as before, having gone through two boring hours to get there.
How this was a best picture nominee is beyond me.
