Powerful, Melancholy New Age Western

This isn't an obvious Coen brothers film. That is both good and bad, I suppose. It is a straightforward telling of a powerful story that is not mucked up by the zaniness. On the other hand it is a bit drab and could use a little zaniness.

The dialog is stilted in the odd way that I found in Gods & Generals. It's a bit odd to think that these characters always talk so formally. It seemed delightfully accurate in Gods & Generals, but here it just sounds stilted and awkward.

This film is powerful and engaging. The performances are excellent. But at the end I do not find myself looking forward to a second viewing.
