Okay, the movie was pretty to look at and the acting was quality and I suppose the direction was alright with what was given, but once you get passed all that, this movie was just a short story that may have won an award at USC's film school.
The movie starts out showing us Sam Flynn's rebellion on the people running his father Kevin Flynn's business. He pulls off some impressive stunts and goes home. He's then greeted by his fathers old friend Alan played by Bruce Boxleitner. Alan tells Sam that he got a page from his father's old arcade which was a big deal because his dad's been missing for years. Sam decides to investigate and ends up finding some secret room where his dad was working on something and to his surprise he gets beamed up into what is called the grid. The grid is not the same world as the first movie. The grid is this entire cyber world made by Kevin Flynn which closely resembles earth in a sense.
Now from here the imagination just blasts with the impressive visuals and begins to play the impressiv score by Daft Punk who really brought this movie to life. He's then picked up by those giant arches from the first movie and is pushed into playing in a arena where people battle to the death with disks that they throw at each other like boomerangs and punch each other with like brass knuckles. So after the extremely hot women dress him up in his new suit and give him his disk (once again, with Daft Punk in the background), he is off into the arena. Now once again, these visuals are just so fun to look at! They're amazing! I mean not as good as Avatar, but they're extremely appealing to the eyes. As Sam Flynn fights his way through the two or three competitors he's put up against, we see some impressive looking fights, I was enjoying every minute of it. And with the impressive score by Daft Punk blasting as we watch these cybernetic Frisbee matches, I think even the most grown up individuals in the crowd were glowing like 10 year olds from the 80's who enjoyed the first movie. After those few brief fights, Sam tries to escape and is pit against a man who carries two disks and his fight scene was probably the best. His moves were so well choreographed which made the disk battling scene far cooler than it just was a minute ago. Sam looses, but is spared and is taken to the guy running the show who seemed to be Kevin Flynn from the 80's, but you could immediately tell that it was CG. At times his face would slightly fall behind as Jeff Bridges body moved around and it does that quite a bit through out the film. Even the lip syncing is off quite a bit in the movie. This is sad because "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was able to pull it off much better and it was made 2 years before this movie.
Anyways, after meeting up with Clu who was revealed to only look like Kevin Flynn, Clu decides he wants to kill Sam in a light cycle race which proves to be another fun part of this movie. Sam Flynn and his randomly selected team fights Clu and his randomly selected team in the arena except no they're on awesome looking motorcycles that can leave a trails of light where ever they go and the scene is awesome! A lot of action, a lot of fun moments where you just go Hell ya! But finally when things get bad and Sam is the last man standing with no hope of survival, he's rescued by a beautiful woman name Quorra played by Olivia Wilde. She busts in in some giant monster truck-like light cycle and brings him to safety.
Now I know what you're thinking. This movie sounds awesome! Well not exactly.. The rest of the movie goes anywhere near as much fun as you've had thus far. The imagination tones down, the action is at a minimum, and the story sinks.
We're taken to the home of the real Kevin Flynn who's been stuck there due because this portal that could take him back had closed and could only be opened from the outside. The reason Kevin couldn't get back in time was because his once great friend Clu turned on him and took over the grid. Sam decides he wants to leave and stop Clu from the outside which is pretty important considering that Clu is now trying to send his soldiers and such through the portal first. So despite his father urging him not to go on this suicide mission, Sam leaves. This is where you would think the movie now takes off onto the great adventure of Tron: Legacy which is wrong. The only middle there is of this movie is when he goes to find someone at a club in the grid and is then attacked by Clu's soldiers. And this scene though it begins looking promising. The only cool part is the music and the visuals. Because even with the help of Quorra and other rebels, the only people that get hurt are innocent programs, rebels and one or two bad guys if any! And that's just at the way end of the scene. And after that scene, we've already hit the beginning of the end. From there the movie has barely any action or fun until the way end which is just a different version of light cycles. Then a few brief things happen and it's over. Now I can't go too deep into what happened to avoid spoilers, but trust me, it wasn't that great.
Now if you appreciate movies mainly for the substance from the story and such, you've come to the wrong place. This movies main focus is the idea of perfection which has been done many times before in more affective and effective ways than this movie. Then there's some stuff about responsibility and etc., but not a lot and nothing really well expressed that makes the movie worth it for the substance. If you were hoping the story would be epic, you've also probably come to the wrong place. After the awesome show given to us by the beginning (or should I say first half), the movie has nothing fun to watch until one scene at the end. If you want something epic, there's plenty of choices you'd enjoy way better.
If you came to watch some impressive visuals and a listen to an impressive soundtrack, then this is the movie for you!
