This movie is one which has caused me to "laugh till my sides split", but also becomes a wonderful love story. While the language and some of the scenes are objectionable, that does not detract from the fact that it is also a warm story.
Both Dan Akroyd (as the wealthy Louis Winthrope III) and Eddie Murphy (a street bum by the name of Billy Ray Valentine) are totally switched characterwise, thanks to the older Duke brothers (played by Don Ameche and Ralph Bellemy). The unscrupulous Duke brothers make a bet that the wealthy man can become a poor beggar and the bum on the street can become a wealthy stockbroker, and thanks to a few dishonest shenangians brought about by the brothers, what they want to accomplish does evenuate and does last, at least for a long while. Louis Winthrope is ousted by his fiance and his fair-weather friends after they believe that he is actually a criminal, and then he ends up living with the prostitute Ophelia (played by Jamie Lee Curtis.) On the other hand, Billy Ray enjoys the company of wealthy, elite people of society. When the Duke brothers' deed is discovered, places are switched again: the wealthy Duke brothers lose all their stock holdings while Billy Ray and Louis become wealthy from the stock market. And, too, Billy finds love with Ophelia who warmly returns it. I have seen it a multitude of times, and I like the comedic part of it and the warm love story entailed in it as well. See it!
