The rating is for the 3D version, my rating of the original version is 5 stars. Save your money and watch it the "classic" way, the way it was originally filmed or watch the DVD version made from the ORIGINAL reels of film rather than watching it as the 3D version - to see why see the second paragraph under this paragraph.

It has a great plot and subplots that still play well in today's military climate.

However, and I must say this in all honesty, while I thoroughly enjoyed its being made into 3D, it seems that changing it from 2D to 3D made it rather grainy in places. I also find that while MOST IMAX pictures have AMAZING sound, I found that Top Gun in IMAX lost something in the translation because my Genius 4-Piece SW-G2.1 1250 38W Gaming Speakers set all the way to maximum and with the bass boost set to maximum knocked my socks off better when the jets took off than the IMAX sound system in the theater did.

So, I give the story line an A, the 3D experience an A, the graininess that the movie gained when going from 2D to 3D C, and the IMAX sound an F (what else did you expect when a $60 set of home speakers rated at 38 W blow you away much better than the sound of an IMAX sound system in the theater does when the movie being compared is the EXACT SAME MOVIE).
