Hit and Miss Vignettes

A great cast and beautiful setting seeped in old world charm didn't quite fire on all cylinders.
Alec Baldwin's character was one of the notable misses- and Alec was one of the reasons I went to see this movie. Saddled with a predictable story. Alec's character is tasked with the role of voice of reason for a young man led astray. This vignette had a couple of interesting twists and turns as Alec's character had a shared history & profession with they young man he played "Jimminy Cricket" to. The writing fell flat there was no real chemistry between Alec and Jesse Eisenburg- or Jesse's character and the two women. Ellen Page was not believable in her role at all. This story dragged the film down quite a bit.

The rest of the cast had a number of fun and funny romantic and absurd situations that made the film worth the watch.
Robert Bengini's "every man" caught up suddenly with no rhyme or reason in the glare of celebrity was the most amusing. Storyline was a clever commentary on today's reality media stars and popped with the expressive performance Bengini delivered.

The "meet the parents" vignette has a number of wonderful hilarious and novel situations. Hats off to the "senior" actors in this story. I found the young couple lacking in charisma. Part of this may again lie with the writing, and part was the casting of the actors. The parents make this vignette "sing"!

Finally, the young married couple's trip to Roma for an important business meeting was for the most part beautifully cast and played. This young couple are stand outs in their roles. The actor part was a bit gross and slimy- which may have been the point- but somehow didn't fit with the spot on casting of the rest of the actors in this romp

All in all a pleasant trip to Rome.
