Like many of LeCarre's slow-moving spy novels, this movie is a slow mover, BY DESIGN. I thought I'd be disappointed by anyone not Alec Guinness who is the quintessential George Smiley. However, Gary Oldman was an excellent Smiley. The movie followed the book and was just enough "different" from the PBS version to be new and fresh. While the movie is excellent, it is Gary Oldman who deserves as Oscar. By the way, I'd never seen him in a movie before.
