Look, I don't mind bad movies. I've seen enough of them. Sometimes they are fun in their badness. Rarely though a bad movie that is fun would have a first class ensemble of actors. This movie, while not the worst movie I've ever seen, it was absolutely the worst I've seen in years. And as far as being a first run "A" movie, it is the worst "A" movie I have ever seen. That is saying a lot. This movie was not even fun to make fun of.

Twenty minutes in, I was like "Oh God, just kill me." But my Dad wanted to watch it SO BAD that I had to stay. This is by far the most incomprehensible movie I have ever seen, and everyone in the theater sort of had a mystified look on their face, except for my Dad and that was because he already read the book! He had to explain the plot to me twice once we got out of the theater. Although I wouldn't recommend watching unless you're somehow into to that, if it's bad in itself, it is absolutely dreadful when you're half asleep by the time you arrive like I was...

The 'critics' said this was the 'Best Thriller of the Year'? It was about as 'thrilling' as warm oatmeal. Typical British movie, I had to watch it with English subtitles from the beginning. A real Snooze-a-roozer. And the ending was an unsatisfying cross between the monolith from 2001 and Kaiser Sose from Usual Suspects.

Ya... Fell asleep about mid-way. Is it just me or was anyone else expecting an action packed movie when they rented it from Red Box. I mean, the title sounds cool :D and I love spy movies so I was all excited... I soon lost that excitement :( VERY DRY and NON-EPIC... I might go watch something AWESOME like Terminator or something along those lines :D

I wish you people would just call "grey matter" BRAINS. Yes, the movie requires brains to enjoy, but it needs patience even more. The pacing wasn't just slow; it was glacial. Dull, dull, dull. Lots of standing around staring at things. By the time you've figured out what the hell has just happened, the next slow scene makes you forget it. Great cast, lousy direction.

A great movie, but it requires a lot from the audience, lots of gray matter, for one thing. Keen perception. Many American audiences like their thinking done for them in movies...and books, for that matter.

People are claiming only the "mindless younger generation" will not be able to appreciate the true brilliance of this flick. However, I'm 63 and enjoy are forms of REAL entertainment - including mystery, drama, actions, comedy, and even a little violence now and then but this movie is one of THE WORST I have ever started but was unable to finish.

Listen, I watch movies to be entertained, not put to sleep. If I want to work my brain just to figure out what the heck is going on, I'll read the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. I don't expect to be put through the same excruciating exercise for a brief, 90 minute escape from reality.

If you could bottle this movie, it could be sold as a Sominex replacement. I suppose if you compare it to a root-canal however; you might find it very delightful and thoroughly "thought-provoking". Good Luck with that.

Lynnette- Think you got it absolutely right; unless there are lots of violent graphics, more blood splattered throughout the film, then younger viewers may very well be bored out of their little pea-pickin' skulls.

A dull, dull movie.

This probably requires more thinking that many of the younger generation has been trained to do.

I always heard that this Jumbotanz gang was weird; waddatreet to see a trailer in the movie house. I don't know about San Diego, but if Jumbotanz came to Kauai I might try to get a ticket, or two, and go. Too bad you got thrown out as the movie was more than good cause there were no car crashing, crashing boring fake special effects to cover for n acting. I saw Becky's New Car and loved Ted Pejovich as the buttler. Pharm out!

Just came from seeing this film. Read the books years ago so didn't remember a lot of it. Got in car and started reviewing film in my head. May need to go back and see it again. It was so good and such a welcome change from most of the drivel that passes for film these days.

If you like Gary Oldman, you will love him in the film Romeo's Bleeding. Also, Lina Olin is killer in this movie. Gary Oldman was in a lot of British films before he became primarily an American star. He's always been outstanding, to me and my family.

haha literally there was a point where a clock was ticking for maybe 15 seconds and I thought those are the seconds of my life...

I thank everyone for there comments, The book was written by John Lecarre, the book was brilliante and dull, it was the story of finding a needle in a haystack of british Intelligence service, which is based on real facts a true story wherein, a college senior is recruited for MI-6 and works his way up the ranks to deputy director, while he also is a russian spy recruited in college in the 1930's.the dull part is no real action, just an slow stepping of finding crucial information to discover the traitor, in the real world of spys, it could take years and years to discover the traitor, usually in motion pictures, it only takes 2 hours to stop the bad guy...lol

Wow reading some of the comments here tells me alot about the people making them. No historical frame of refrence, ADHD compliant and very small minded. Part of the real world is the proverbial SPY vs SPY and unlike the fantasy world of James Bond the action is slow and methotical. Not to mention the movie was never advertised as an action thriller so waht was the author of this review even thinking? Perhaps he wasn't, but was just more orless upset because he got the wrong impression with out looking into the facts.

Really...it has zero action at all...and zero suspense. The problem was not the story or actors; it was the pacing...by the time the plot kicked in I was already looking for the exits.

You’ll need to think like a spy. Not the James Bond type. You won’t hear a long monologue by one of the characters telling you the plot. Something like: A so George, I knew it was you because I saw you put the book on the shelf the same way Control did. Or some similar drivel. Modern movies have made us all pretty lazy when watching.

Thank you, Robert, for your valuable positive review of this film. Now I know why it's showing everywhere in Dallas, TX but didn't even last 3 days at the one theater in Fort Worth (the city right next door known as Cowtown, I'm sorry to say) that supposedly champions indie films!
