Naked and wrapped in a shower curtain at the back of a bus, fifteen-year-old Tracey Berkowitz tells her story of the past couple of days as she looks for her brother Sonny, who thinks he’s a dog. Tracey’s story takes us into her emotional home, her dark school, her relations with her wacky shrink, and her fantasies of her rock-star-wannabe boyfriend Billy Zero.

The Tracey Fragments stars Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (Juno, Smart People), Zie Souwand, Slim Twig and Maxwell McCabe-Lokos (Mouth To Mouth, Lars and the Real Girl).

The Tracey Fragments is a unique film that tells the honest and gripping story of a young teenage girl who hates life by showing her memories of the past couple of days. Director Bruce McDonald (The Love Crimes of Gillian Guess, Picture Claire) portrays Tracey’s memories by showing the various fragments of her thoughts in different frames on the screen. Throughout the film you might see anywhere from one to several frames. Some are big squares while others are small shapes. Bruce uses this innovative technique because, in reality, we do not think linearly but in several different fragments. When you’re telling a story from memory, you’re thinking of several different pieces of the story at the same time that you’re telling it.

The Tracey Fragments score is produced by Toronto’s indie rock band, Broken Social Scene. The band has received the Alternative Album of the Year Juno Award twice, once in 2003 for You Forgot It in People and a second time in 2006 for its self-titled album, Broken Social Scene. The band is becoming more familiar with producing film scores as it has been featured on the soundtracks of Lie with Me (2005), Half Nelson (2006) and Snow Cake (2006).

The Tracey Fragments might be a little difficult to watch, but artistically it is cutting edge and unique. It took the crew 14 days to shoot the film while editing took 4-5 months. If you don’t mind the fragmented screen and love watching honest and sometimes darker films rather than the cliched Hollywood films, you will fall in love with this story.

The Tracey Fragments is an independent film distributed by Alliance Films in Canada and THINKFilm in the U.S. The film’s DVD hits shelves July 8, 2008.
