I have always loved Edgar Allan Poe. I like John Cusack. Then give him a great intelligent script about Poe and this is one good movie. I have read all of Poe's stories and have visited places in Baltimore associated with Poe. I hate movies which don't ring true. This movie does. There aren't any holes in the plot. The plot is like a roller coaster and all you need to do is watch careful to follow the twist and turns.
There were a few very bloody scene especially The Pit & the Pendulum piece, but then there are scene where poetry is spoken. There are scene of someone buried alive which creeps me out. I hate getting an MRI.
John Cusack was the only actor, I actually recognized which is nice because there aren't any expectations. You don't have to go beyond the actor to get to the character.
My one very minor criticism was the crazy credits at the end that had nothing to do with the movie with modern wild music. What was that all about?
