The biggest problem with the Polar Express was a blunder on the part of the digital animators.
Q: What blunder?
A: They really, really, REALLY screwed up by coloring the eyeballs and teeth of the characters much darker than they should have.
This awful mistake caused every character to appear 'dead eyed' and 'zombie like'.
One of the major things that attracts humans to one another (and makes children especially appealing) are white eyes and white teeth.
If you're going to create make believe humans that you want everyone to like... be sure to err on the side of caution and make the eyes and teeth slightly whiter than they might be in real life. But whatever you do... DON'T MAKE THEM DARKER!!
P.S. There was also a disturbing overuse of dark rings under the eyes of characters. Another blunder. And what ever happened to 'Jolly Saint Nick?' This Santa was about as happy as a dead gold fish being flushed down the toilet.
