The Long Goodbye(1973)- User Reviews

Hideous filmaking

This "interpretation" of the classic novel, The Long Goodbye" should never have been made. It has no redeeming features- the acting is abysmal and the direction seems drunken.
The original story is so butchered that it makes no sense. The books was sharp and captivating. In contrast the movie is fractured and amateurish.
Gould's portrayal is criminal. He mumbles thought the whole movie and puts more effort into smoking his cigarettes than he does trying to act!
I don't know what Altman was thinking. He took a great storyline and chopped it up. Then he insisted that a no talent play the lead roll. It's as if he intentionally tried to make the movie fail.
It's a good thing that Raymond Chandler died in 1959 because this movie would have killed him!
Do yourself a favor- read the book and avoid this movie at all costs!
