Great storyline - Christmas with Henry II and family. Who is plotting with/against whom. Who is bedding whom. Watch alliances shift and change. Emotions run high as the contest for the English crown continues. Innocent bystanders beware.
Setting is realistic for time.
I was blown away when I first saw this movie and still find nuances that I'd missed the countless times I'd seen it before.
The acting is better than my poor linguistic skills can describe.
Movie reminds you that history was lived by real people, with wants, desires, fears, etc. It is not a cold recitation of facts and dates.
Henry II and Eleanor of Aquatain (sp) had a voitile relationship with each other (both wanted crown) and their children (remember Richard the Lionhearted and Prince John (of Robin Hood and the Magna Carta). Oh yes, don't forget Geoffrey (though he often is).
