I rented The Last Time having never heard of it. Being enticed by Michael Keaton on the cover of a movie deemed a dark comedy, my curiosity to how he is today as an actor was ignited. Keaton was always good at walking the line of soap opera & comedy. In this case, he walks the line of very dark comedy. Comedy so dark that you don't so even chuckle. He is no longer a comedian but a dark actor. It tells the story of a an old bitter scrooge-esque businessman whose life is so miserable in his eyes that he manages to get away with being one of the most synical people you will ever mee based solely on his overly gifted sales skills. Brendon's Frasier's character is a young bright-eyed midwesterner whose stress of the small fish in a big pond has completely town away his confidence and identity. Keaton is appaled at first until he meets Fraser's smart and sexy fiance. Keaton feels far superior to Fraser so much that he plays games with his life with hopes to whisk the youngster's fiance & escape out of the rat race which he has over-the-toply come to loathe. The dark affair seems paved with the best intentions until Fraser's melt down (a typically heard meltdown in the business world) takes a psychologically dangerous turn for the worse.
The movie is basically a soap opera with a little more depth & not much more heart. It's interesting enough where you can ignore the seen-it-before twist at the end & take the movie for what it is. An interesting movie to rent if there is nothing at the video store that catches your attention. The directing was good & acting solid. The story just lacked any umph. However, Keaton still impresses me as an actor. I wouldn't mind renting Mr. Mom sometime soon. Keaton is still an extreme talent and his big- heart-being covered-up-by-a-tough -mature-view-of-the-world act is still a joy to observe..
