This movie and the hysteria surrounding it is sick and highly disturbing for many reasons. It is hard to believe that a book and movie could be so extremely popular when the core of the story involved young kids killing other young kids for the sake of entertainment. The entire concept is sick and repulsive. And please save your attacks about how I don’t understand that it’s just a cruel and evil government forcing this to happen. Yes I realize it’s a fictional future society where the government has become totally corrupt, oppressive and fascistic forcing the pure innocents into such abominable acts, and that pure love finally prevails in the end. That doesn’t change anything. The concept is still completely sick and disturbing and the fact that this subject matter has captured the imagination of young people is even more so. The entire story could have been told completely differently without the appalling and disgusting central story line. But that would be too much work and take too much time. And don’t even try to justify the sick concept by saying the poor innocent kids were forced into these acts. At the start of the “games” the mob of young kids were so excited and glorified in the killing of a young girl. They laughed with one saying “did you see the look on her face”, followed by mindless and blood thirsty laughter. Not exactly the behavior of poor innocent kids being forced into performing atrocious acts.
Apart from the disgusting and disturbing subject matter the movie itself was atrociously made. It was extremely slow to develop and did an extremely poor job in telling any kind of coherent story. Scenes were just hinted at instead of fully developed and explained. The cinematography in general and camera work in particular was even worse. It looked like a really bad tv movie not a big budget Hollywood picture with several big time actors. The actors weren’t horrible but most seemed completely bewildered in just what was going on. The whole thing seemed rushed and was simply trying to cash in on the popularity of the book. The entire movie was very simplistic and seemed designed for 12 year old minds that don’t question anything too deeply. Unfortunately it’s PG13 so the target audience couldn’t even get in. It’s also appalling that it was a PG13 film. Only 17 year olds and above should be allowed to see this piece of trash. It actually deserved negative stars but unfortunately one is the least you can assign.
