before i start on the movie, i just want to say that i'm korean, and i think that many of the reviewers are korean and giving this movie high ratings to support korean movies. i'm not going to do that. this was DEFINITELY "not the best movie that i've ever seen", as some of the reviewers have stated.
also, you have to understand korean directors. most of them are about style over substance. they'd rather just give you something to see rather than flesh it out. the host felt like a movie that was made to show off the computer animation skills that they had developed.
the first mistake was showing the CG monster in broad daylight. there's a reason why monsters are always in the dark. they are scarier. and, it's easier to make monsters in shadows. a CG monster in daylight just looks... fake.
secondly, the acting of the american actors, especially the scientist guy at the beginning... pathetic. i'm sure they just grabbed the first nerdy looking american they could find in seoul and stuck him in there.
i did like the theme of family loyalty and the sporadic humor. the host is an enjoyable movie, but don't expect anything spectacular.
p.s. i was actually there at the Han River when they were filming this movie.
