If you are already a fan of this story, and you are yearning for more, you'll love it. You will be excited when you figure out that it is only the first of three!
If you aren't an ardent follower, or if you are brand new to the story, you'll be less impressed. You'll look back at the end of the two and a half hours and think "long time, not much happened". I think it was hardly enough to create new fans. The monsters were too disgusting, the horrendous violence was unnecessary and the special effects were way over done. The characters were pretty well developed, but the story was short and overwhelmed by the other stuff. It would scare the hell out of a little kid.
In contrast to a Hobbit/Wizard/Ogre fan, I was disappointed to find out it is three movies. I likened it to a Star Trek movie, where only existing fans get really excited about it.
