My last reading of the Hobbit was in the misty 60's, so I came to Peter Jackson's rendering of this story with the core background - and found his adaptations and scene extensions immensely fulfilling and far from boring. I was left very satisfied with the start of the Unexpected Journey - how they created a complete storyline with a beginning, middle and breathing space for the real action to come - without feeling I was left high and dry and waiting a year for the next segment of this tale.
I saw the base case - No HFR, no 3D - and found the rich, detailed visuals left me very comfortable that I was fully back in middle earth. The score was at once comfortable and supportive with it readily advancing the action and heightening the suspense.
I was a bit leary going into this with the stories LOTR and Hobbit presented bass ackwards - but found the story extensions with the presaged growth of Sauron's influence worrying the elven stewards of middle earth to make much more sense than the rise of the "necromancer" in my initial reading of the Hobbit.
Bottom-line, if you enjoyed LOTR you will enjoy the Hobbit.
