Personally, I thought Jackson turned the LOTR trilogy into a slasher film so my expectations weren't particularly high for his Hobbit. While the script was obviously aimed at folks who needed a lot of adrenalin to stay seated for 2.8 hours I felt that Jackson remained close enough to the spirit of the original to justify a positive recommendation.
My LOTR complaints were primarily about small details that spoiled/undemrined some of the important characters. He took a mythic story and destroyed many of the mythic elements of several of the significant characters. He did not make the same mistake with the Hobbit so I will enthusiastically encourage LOTR fans to see it.
