The Hobbit exceeded my expectations. One thing that I really enjoyed was the opening, which not only covered Hobbits, but some of the history of Middle Earth. The history of the dwarves, building this city, then running from the dragon were excellent and brought to life more clearly, even than in the books. I particularly liked that the showed how the love of gold harmed them throughout their history. In some ways, this story is more of a tragedy, the tragedy of Thorin Oakenshield.
On the more cheerful side, there many funny scenes with the dwarves, especially their song when cleaning Bilbo's dishes.
One of the few changes was in the character of Bilbo. He is more retiring and yet braver than seen in the book. I look forward to the next movie.
