A Real Let Down

I read both the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit several decades ago as a young man in the US Army. I found them to be a mystical experience and enjoyed them immensely. I enjoyed the first two movies in the LOTR series, but was extremely annoyed that Jackson and New Line edited the ending to leave out the scouring of the Shire. By doing this they completely altered the point Tolkein wanted to make about the shire and the costs of victory.

The Hobbit is a very bad movie in my opinion. It continues the bloated, boring and endless blah blah of the last hour of the Return of the King. It is clear the Hobbit contained enough material to make ONE excellent movie. It contained enough material to make TWO fairly good movies. It does not contain enough material to make THREE mediocre movies. The Hobbit is 166 minutes long. The previews, all seven of them, were another 15 minutes. This is a three hour movie, of which 90 minutes could have been easily cut. Further, it was very derivative of the LOTR series. It contained several scenes, the moth coming to Gandalf, the Eagles picking them up that were lifted from the LOTR series. It was if Jackson ran out of ideas.

The Hobbit was a major let down for me. It was tedious, bloated, slow moving and took forever to get going. The first part was the dwarf/hobbit version of Animal House with the food fights! After that, it just lurched along without much of a point. It wasn't really a movie at all; it was a series of scenes thrown in to add time.

Skip the movie in the theaters. See it on DVD. You can skip the 15 minutes of previews, as well as the first 45 minutes. You can also skip at will. The big fight scene was also waaaaay too long and was the scene in Moria all over again.

Face it. Jackson sold out even worse on the Hobbit than he did with the botched ending of the Return of the King. I'm not sure who opted for three bloated, tedious movies instead of one great one, or two fairly good ones.

Jackson still has ONE good movie out of the Hobbit. It just will take him three movies to do it!

The Hobbit is a dud.
