I am so sick of all these religious freaks out there bad mouthing this movie. This movie is not intended to brain wash kids or make you leave your faith. It's called entertainment. Being raised catholic I saw no way a kid could see this movie as being against God, as my nephews friend told him it was. The kid would have to be a theology major and sit there analyzing the movie while watching it.
The movie is very similar to the Chronicles of Narnia in animation. It starts with a brief description of how there are many different worlds, some in which souls are inside the body, others in which they are outside and somewhat companions. It goes further into talking about how important free will is (nothing wrong with that) and that we each must think for ourselves. There's a girl at the center of the film that holds the golden compass. The hidden message here is don't brain wash your kids, let them think for themselves, that doesn't necessarily mean they don't have to believe in God, as many religious organizations would have you believe.
Think for yourselves and watch the movie. Great animation, entertaining storyline and great acting.
