Sure, the acting, the directing all fine. It's the way the story's told. All the focus is on the miserable sex the young girl endures and her savage revenge. Sure you're glad she gets her revenge but it's all so hollow. Then the sex she gives out and receives no love in return. The whole world of this film is hollow. It leaves you empty and wishing for a hot shower.
We get it that Sweden is cold - it makes it difficult to connect with these characters, save for the female hero. And there's no suspense, and less mystery to the mystery.
Yes, corruption is disgusting at every level. But apparently because this young woman is living on the edge and decked out in punk jewelry the audience has the right to watch her get raped in every detail and then see her throw herself at the first decent father figure in her life.
The sheer documentary quality of these scenes made this into pornography.
Oh and they do finally Google their way into solving the mystery - but you don't care about it very much...
