The Door in the Floor is a depressing, slow, but vigorating drama. It's about a boy, Eddie, (Jon Foster in his acting debut) who takes on the job of writer's assistant to his favorite author, Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges). During this time Ted and his wife, Marion (the amazing Kim Basinger) decided to seperate for awhile and get a fix on their relationship. Marion finds happiness in the young Eddie. The film is slow but it's not boring. The main problem with the story is it contains major sexuality. I did not expect to see that much sexuality in this movie; the most I've seen from any movie. The sex scenes were very graphic, and that much of them was not needed. The only thing they added to the film was a longer running time. I was like, "We get the point. They have a very sexual relationship." The title of this movie could have been The Penis in the Hole (no offense), and I found that very unpleasant. I feel like peple should be forewarned before they see this movie about its content. Otherwise, the story was good and featured some good performances.
The acting was around what I expected. The newcomer Jon Foster did excellent in his feature debut. His character grew on me throughout the film. I expected a little more from Jeff Bridges though. I had heard about his performance and it didn't live up to my expectations. He did do good though. The first half of the film there was nothing special about his performance. The, towards the end of the movie he came out of his shell and did really well. I also enjoyed little Elle Fanning as Ruth, the daughter of Marion and Ted. She lifted some of the depression from the film and provided some minor laughs and lots of smiles. Kim Basinger did the best out of the cast though. She delves into her role and makes it so believable. You could just visualize clearly the rough times of her past just by looking at her face.
Overall, The Door in the Floor is a good movie that is balanced by it pros and cons. Warning: it's content is very graphic, it definitely deserved its R rating. The pro is the performances were excellent. The performances were wut guided the slow story along smoothly. The Door in the Floor is definitely worth checking out.
