This is a film whose main motive is to show us these scenes of tension, a breakdown of a small group of people in a closed and hopeless environment. The filmmakers took an unexpectedly cinematic approach with a limited, sparse, but very nicely applied soundtrack and the longer unrated version made it a fast moving two hour movie. Hardly a scene goes by without the possibility of someone absolutely freaking out and doing something crazy, which they occasionally do. The viewer is effectively invited to sympathize with the sane and the crazy.
The social dynamics of living in a fallout shelter are presented well enough. It helps that most of the acting is pretty decent, save for Michael Behn's silly grandiosity. I was not expecting Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Eklund to be as good as they were, and their development with Arquette's character is shown with a surrealism that leaves an impact. The soldiers presence was handled well, leaving enough to the imagination that I comfortably filled in the blanks.
Anyone who reads a synopsis of what this movie is about and is intrigued should expect a solid film that deserves a viewing.
