A Brilliant Ending to a Brilliant Trilogy

The Dark Knight Rises picks up eight years after the events of the Dark Knight, and follows the story of Bruce Wayne as he slips back into the mask of Batman in order to fight a new villain named Bane, who seeks to create a world of chaos and destruction within Gotham City.

Despite the movie's length and dark overtones (do NOT take young kids to see this movie), I absolutely loved The Dark Knight Rises. Christopher Nolan is a visionary director who really took the story of Batman and brought it to a new level. I'm not a fan of superhero movies, but the story that Nolan created is both emotionally brutal and politically complex. He has created a hero whom we can both cheer and despair with during his brightest and darkest hours, and I applaud Christian Bale for portraying such a hero throughout all three movies.

The performance from the other actors were strong as well. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman were impeccable as usual, and I enjoyed seeing Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. I had no doubts that she would pull off a solid performance, and I think she portrayed both the seductive humor and conflicting will of Selene Kyle very well. One of my most favorite performance's, however, was Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake. Blake's earnest intentions to help Batman and Gotham City really warmed me, and his surprising role in the end (did NOT see that coming) truly brought this trilogy to a satisfying end.

The only disappointment I had with this movie was Tom Hardy as Bane. Though I think Hardy is a good actor, it was hard to understand a lot of what he was through that mask, and I don't think his character produced that terror and shock that Heath Ledger as the Joker was able to pull off so well (though I know that Hardy had a lot to live up too). I think if maybe his voice hadn't sounded so cheesy, he would have been more scary.

Overall, I thought that the action scenes, performances, storyline, and music (a high salute to Hans Zimmer) was well done, and a great ending to the Batman series. I can't wait to see what next project Nolan will do!
