Engaging Drama That Falls A Little Flat

This is a good movie about an interesting historical episode in American history. I wish I could feel more passionate about it after having viewed it.

It just seems a bit lifeless. I think it had trouble dealing with the period. The best period dramas immerse you into the culture of the time. This one always felt like it was a show. The characters seem like cardboard cutouts somehow although the acting isn't really bad.

James McAvoy doesn't have the heft to carry this film. The film seems self-consciously trying to make a point about America today. These and other factors drain the life out of this movie. It's not that it is bad, but it could have been so much better.
