As each is diagnosed with cancer and have from 6-months to 1-year to live, Edward (Nicholson)
challenges Carter (Freeman) to live the rest of their lives doing what they have always wanted to do. Hence the Bucket List.
The story is okay even though the script is weak in many areas. I mean you have two of the best actors on the planet playing characters who do things they never dreamed they would do for lack of money for one and lack of time for the other. And, yet, there is something missing. You know, as the movie goes on, one or both will die. Yes, there are some philosophical questions for them to ponder, the meaning of life, God or no God, regrets etc. as they go sky diving, sit atop a pyramid, visit the Taj Mahal, race vintage cars, and have expensive dinners. Still something is missing. Could it be we see their trek only from their perspective and get caught up in it? And, ……go along with it too? Hmmmm……became sort of dull. If the people left behind or on the outs had more lines (oh, they had some, not much though), even among themselves, in what these two were doing, the movie may have had more of an impact. Hmmmmm………
One thing that did bother me was this. When the movie starts you hear Morgan Freeman’s voice as Carter and one would assume by the end of the movie he would still be alive to finish the story. Not so. At the end of the movie Carter has passed on, yet he continues the narrative. It would have been better if the Narrator was not Carter. Sorry to give something away like this, but it really doesn’t take away from the movie. I just thought that was a stupid thing the Director did. The Narrator should have been Edward’s right hand man, Thomas (Hayes) and the narration from his perspective would have had a greater impact and opened the movie up to better comedic lines and understanding of Edward (the rich one) and the way he interacted with Carter and life in general. And, Sean Hayes is one of the funniest around and you don’t fully use him? But, Morgan Freeman, dead or alive, has such a wonderful voice the Director went with him.
The movie saves itself because the chemistry between Freeman and Nicholson is really good, and we enjoy their banter.
Violence: No,
Sex: No,
Nudity: No,
Langugage: Yes, there is some toward the end of the movie.
