"Here comes the Bride".
The Creature speaks! (Lugosi would have liked THIS one.) Victor Frankenstein (again Colin Clive: he survived the first one, remember?) and Dr. Pretorius (campy and very gay Ernest Thesiger) are wierd bed-fellows (literally!): they play dress-the-dolly-up with the Creature's mate, the title's bride, wonderful Elsa Lanchester (she also plays the story's narrator, Mary Shelley). It would seem that director Whale was determined to make a parody of himself, and instead he churned out a little wonder that many critics consider supperior than the fisrt part. Una O'Connor screeches exactly like she did in Whale's "The Invisible Man"; young and beautiful Valerie Hobson takes Mae Clark's place as Elizabeth and Boris Karloff is... Boris Karloff at his best, once more. Not as good as the first, but close behind: second best.
