When one think's about The Mutiny on The Bounty, most recall the Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando version and not this underrated little gem.
The Bounty has all the hallmarks of a great epic, the screenplay takes a lengendary story and transforms it into both a character study, this is the first and only version that depicts Bligh and Christian as trustworthy friends, also the film is an amazing spectacle with its sweeping cinematography and Donaldson's ambitious direction which doesn't falter. Donaldson had a major challange to overcome, by putting his vision on screen and also trying to distance himself, yet please, the ever great David Lean, who was the original director of the project.
Hopkins is amazing as Captain Bligh and Gibson provides great support as Fletcher Christian. The rapport between them is seen on screen and it is almost heartbreaking that these two friends will slowly become enemies.
However the films star is the score and its again dome by the ever great Vangelis. His score captures both the mystery and the passions of the sea and the regret that Christian may have had into taking the Bounty away from Bligh's command.
An epic that needs to be reviewed and visted again since it stands better than most epics seen in multiplexes today.
