Jack Nicholson as a transformed border patrol agent takes this Tony Richardson directed drama to great heights. He keeps his emotions in check, just under the surface for much of the picture, but you always know that he is ready to explode at any moment. Harvey Keitel is quite ingratiating as his "partner", and Valerie Perrine appropiately ditzy as his clueless wife. And now more than a quarter of a century later this realistic portait of a highly complex, and seemingly impossible issue seems just as topical as ever!
