Depalma's been soooooo much better.

This film doesn't even feel like it's been directed by Brian Depalma. His trademark style is no where to be found in this muddled and flimsy film version of Tom Wolfe's FAR superior novel portraying a successful Wall Street broker who with his mistress takes a wrong turn in Brooklyn one night, killing a black man by accident and becoming a martyr for the District Attorneys need to find a WASPY scapegoat in a world of rising racial tension.

Hanks is horribly miscast as the lead, Melanie Griffith is just annoying, Bruce Willis seems to be floating in the waves, while Morgan Freeman tries hard but can't break the bonds of weakly written character. Michael Cristofer's script is messy and largely responsible for the poor performances. Depalma's vision is a tremendous let down. He needs to stick to crime drama where he's been hugely successful (Blow Out, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way, Scarface) and stay far away from satire. The films only saving grace is the photography done by (I've said this before, I know, and I'll say it again and again) the greatest cinematographer in the history of Hollywood, Vilmos Zsigmond.
