I think the mystery of the birds and the city, as well as the overall background mystery of Hedren, furthers the suspense of the movie. Hitchcock is good at making us look differently about everyday things.
Psycho made us fear taking showers in someplace other then our homes.
Rear Window made us fear our neighbors.
Vertigo made heights more terrifying.

I was required to watch this for my film class. I was pleasantly surprised! I had never seen it before, and was really creeped out.

I first saw The Birds when I was in my early teens.
In those days I watched scary movies on the weekends
and the weekend movie host made every movie better.
