Although it was enjoyable to watch and John Goodman here proves he's capable of playing leading roles, I thought that the physical description of Babe Ruth goes beyond stretching the truth. For starters, Babe Ruth was not a chunky person in weight and Goodman's performance gives its audience the impression that Babe Ruth was nothing more than a bona-fide steak-eating, homerun-hitting son of a gun who never trains with the others and is just lucky at the bat, when in fact the real Babe Ruth was a strong man who trained rigorously to be one of the greatest athletes in baseball history.
The roots of the hostilties between Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig was traced back incorrectly too. From what I've read, Gehrig and Ruth were close friends and teamates with each other. Gehrig got upset because Ruth was getting more publicity than him. But in this movie, their anger came about when Lou was assuming that his wife was having a secret affair with Ruth which was probably used to create a dramatic storyline between the two rival icons.
When on the field, Babe Ruth was large and in charge. He was never sloched on the field like he was portrayed here. The only time he was ackward was outside the baseball field. But that could be due to his poor upbringing and that explains why he lacked family values. However, the Babe did have a special place in his heart for children, in a Fred Flintstone kind of way. He may be rogue to adults, but holds a special place in his heart for children, but that could be due to the lack of parental care from his parents.
Overall it was a good movie by nature, but to those baseball gurus who have read the biography of the "Sultan of Swing" will be disappointed at how their beloved hero was portrayed here in terms of his phisicality and his mentality too weather it's half truths or pure fiction.. To me, no matter how Babe Ruth is portrayed here, his legacy will remain unscathed and will forever in our hearts as one of the greatest ball players in the history of baseball.
