The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford(2007)- User Reviews

R.I.P Jesse James....if God allows it.

Its a movie about Jesse James, and not so much his hay day, as it is his latter years where there wasnt as much excitement. Hes still young, but its at the end of all the adventures he had, robbing and killing, and when i saw the preview for this movie, it presented it self like it would be a thoughtfull film, a deeper film. It wasnt marketed as an action wstern or anything. So the people so dissapointed by it should only be dissapointed with there own misguided expectations.

This was more so a film that draws its strength from its acting, mood, and atmosphere. Anyone who saw the trailer, who had an ounce of brain cell activity, would of noticed that it was more of a reflection, than a root'n toot'n six shoot'n gun sling'n blockbuster. This aint 3:10 To Yuma. Its by far a more important film, and much better acted.

There are some violent scenes here and there. And the most excitement you get all at once is in the beginning ,which involves stopping a train. That was interesting. Too bad they couldnt have done the years prior to all this, but i dont think there has ever been a movie on this part of Jesse James life, so i think its different and is a needed movie.

Ive never been a big fan of Brad Pitt's acting style, but ive never hated it either, and ive liked seeing him in certain movies. I first got a decent introduction to him in the film "Seven Years In Tibet". And this has probubly been his finest role since that movie.

Anyways, the guy who plays the COWARD, is performs a realistic socially challenged weird young adult, who has a idolizes James as a little kid would do to their western hero on tv. Its irritating, but its authentic, and Casey Affleck is a good actor, he really pulled off that character, where you really dispised him at times, as a pathetic phony, wanna be, wimp and opprotunist. Theres allways people like that in society. The losers that have to decieve and lie to try to come across as more than they are, and sometimes get lucky and actually fool some ignorant souls for a season.

But in Roberts case, no one ever cared, even to this day, and even with this film, his only spotlight he gets to the 21st century population, is his name becoming synonymous with the word COWARD.

But its not that hes ruins the movie. Not at all. His character is just acted so well, that you just start reacting with your own emotions, and you dont want Jesse to die. You wanna get to know Jesse more, and you end up wanting him to blow Robert away.

Its kind of a sad/cold story, but i didnt feel depressed or dissapointed at the films close. I actually wished i could of saw more of Jesse Jame's story. I got a bit emotionally invested in his character, and i wanted him to get rid of all his two faced hench men. And it clearly seems that Jesse sees it coming, and knows its coming, and the way the film potrays it, its as if Jesse allowed it all to happen. That he allowed his assination.

Maybe he was tired of it all. Maybe that was his way out. He no longer cared, as to humor this pathetic kid, as it were.

Theres some nice shots of scenery in the movie. Of fields of wheat, and especially the snow covered fields. Its a cold film. A quality film. I just wish it included the years before all this, if they would made it into a western epic, showing us Jesse at an even younger age, and doing his famous stuff, and gradually moving it to the "assination". Then i think it would of been a great film.

Not that this movie is bad. Its well made. I just felt it was missing something. Maybe Brad Pitt will do a prequel to this film. Though thats probubly a far fetched wish.

If you like westerns, and some depth, and just want to relax and soak up what seems to be a book come to life, as told by a welcome narrative every now and then. Then i think youll appreciate the film. Its a decent movie. And shows us another side of the a western film. They dont all have to be wildly exciting , with tons of gun fights. Sometimes we need to take a realistic peek into the life of someone like Jesse James, aside from all the sensationalism attributed to his person.
