I was sitting up late on Xbox live after watching a pretty bad movie trying to figure out a way to redeem some of my time back. I saw that you can rent movies (not cheaply) on Xbox live. I wanted to see if the quality was any good, I am still boycotting bluray for the time being, so I picked out Sunshine. Cillian Murphy is one of the best and most underrated actors today. His performance in Batman Begins was great and the parts of Inception he was in I felt like his presence took over the screen. I also got the movie for Christ Evans, by word of mouth I heard his acting in the movie was incredible. I break my reviews into the four parts yahoo provides then an overall grade.
Story - Very plain, the sun is dying and we follow the Icarus II on a mission to re-ignite the dying sun with a bomb the size of Manhattan Island. The previous Icarus failed at delivering their bomb and was thought to have maybe exploded while heading to the sun or become lost in space with the Robinson family (my attempt at humor). After a quick slingshot around Mercury with some plot and character development and a healthy portion of some serious visual eye feasts they discover something not far from the sun and the story goes from there.
Acting - I honestly can't really tell bad acting because I think everyone has their own style but I have seen a few movies where I was horrified at the acting, this isn't one of them. Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans lead the way the entire movie with these dominating performances and screen time that lasts almost the entire movie. Everyone else holds their part in the movie and a couple others show some serious talent.
Direction - I knew the director directed Slumdog Millionaire so I figured if it was half as good as Slumdog it would be worth the time. I though it was better than Slumdog, Slumdog wasnt really my cup of tea it was just a nice change of pace from my action and scifi movies and my girl friends rom-com picks. Sunshine is definately my favorite Sci-fi movie, yes it beats the s**t out of Avatar because I can watch this movie on a normal TV and be just as impressed as if I saw it in a theater. Anywho, the direction was great even though the director is alien to me.
Visuals - The movie shines here, for such a low budget movie by hollywoods standards the visuals were amazing. I loved the room where they could look at the sun as they headed towards it and the room would get brighter and brighter because it couldn't fully block the suns power. The most breathtaking shot to me was when the crew watched Mercury pass in front of them as it revolved around the sun, I felt like a kid using his imagination in fourth grade learning about all of the planets again. The film did such a great job of immersing you in that deep space feeling and showing how powerful the sun is.
Overall - The movie was great. I wont give away the other two parts to the story but you need to see it for yourself. Great acting, fantastic visuals and the story constantly had a change of pace and even a genre switch in the end which really caught me off guard but it wound up being a really nice treat. Great movie, definitely earned the R rating so any parents beware.
