"It's all over Malcom.I've got it under control."
So swears Congressman, David Lane Dilbeck (Burt Reynolds)to his manager of sorts, Malcolm Muldowsky (Paul Gilfoyle) who's less than thrilled with him right now, and let's him know that in bold language.
"You can't talk to me like that," Dilbeck says "I'm a United States Congressman."
"You get caught in a Stripper's Bar, hitting a guy over the head with a champaigne bottle and get photographed, what am I supposed to call you? Winston *****ING Churchill!"
This takes us back to the movie's opening scene, at Mr. Orly's Eager Beaver, where Erin Grant (Demi Moore) is in her eighth week as an exotic dancer.
Erin is going through a low point in her life, as her wheel-chair thieving, pill addicted husband Daryll (Robert Patrick) has just gotten full custody of their little daughter Angela (Rumer Willis) thanks to an incompetent judge who was a fan of his High School foot-ball playing.
On top of that, Daryll has gotten Erin fired from her job at the FBI, (hence the exotic dancing), and has disappeared with Angela.
It is at this point when we meet Congressman Dilbeck, who rolls up to the Topless Bar, in his white strech limo, in the company of his reluctant assistant Erb Crandal (Robert Stanton), who -forseeing a disaster- asks the valet to park it close...
"Park it VERY close." he adds for emphasis.
His instincts prove to be right when, after a perfomance by Monique Jr.(Dina Waters), Erin Grant comes on stage wearing a suit, and begins a very seductive (if tasteful) dance.
Dilbeck goes ga-ga, referring to Erin as an "angel" while a bunch of drunk bachelor party members start cheering in her direction, and the future groom puts his arms around her.
This causes Dilbeck to snap, grabbing a champagne bottle from its ice bucket, which he brings down upon the entranced lover's head.
It is at this point when he is recognized (AND photographed) by none other than Jerry Killian (William Hill), a quiet but devoted admirer of Erin who has decided to use what he has to black mail Dilbeck into using his influence with the courts to win Erin her custody battle...
What Killian doesn't know, is that Dilbeck is in bed with some very sleazy sugar tycoons who see it as being in their best interest that Dilbeck win the election, and are not about to let Killian get in their way.
When Killian's body is found floating on a lake, Lt. Garcia (Armand Assante) finds him, and is compelled, due to his job as a cop, to follow up on things...
The Congressman, meanwhile, has sworn that he will not campaign until he can possess Erin's "actual velvet self", but in the meantime needs something personal to tide him over.
"How personal?" Erb asks with a sigh
"Instensely personal."
Ving Rhames is terrific as The Eager Beaver's bouncer named Shad. His scheme to make a lot of money by planting a cockroach in yogurt is hysterical, as his going to his lawyer's office with a drill in one hand.
This is truly one of Demi Moore's best roles, and I think she enjoyed playing it.
The soundtrack and the dancing are terrific:
Exotic without being lude or pornographic.
But it is Burt Reynolds who ultimately steals the show:
His portrayal of a lecherous Congrassman so dettached from reality that he slathers himself in Vaseline right before he has to make a speech to the American Christian Association if off the charts.
He is the humor of the movie (along with Ving Rhames), and it is my opinion that this may of been the role of his life.
The movie is terrific. Surprising and Original.
