I guess you don't get it. Of course this movie shows differences between it and any other Trek story line! Once Nero flew out of the red matter singularity all bets were off. String theory tells us when Nero and Spock emerged through the black hole, the Star Trek universe we have come to know and love was left behind on the other side. A separate timeline/universe was created/split off where ANYTHING can happen. No one is safe, and that's the beauty of it. Here Kirk's father is dead, Spock's mother dies, and Vulcan is destroyed. You may not like these and other future changes, but they are not "flaws". Like it or not, future films need not follow previous Trek story lines. Reboots like this happen all the time in film, television, and comic book universes like Marvel and DC. I see no "flaws" in this Star Trek movie, and may I say you might consider doing some research of your own before you blast anyone else. May the force live long and prosper...

First of all, you CANNOT please all of the Star Trek fans at ANY time. Between the fanatical fanboys who delve into the minutiae of every last little thing to the casual fan who grew up watching the original and then each new series, you will #$%$ off someone by changing something. So the film makers, in my opinion, wisely chose to change everything but keep the characters we all know and love. What better way to explore the final frontier than with characters we grew up with but put them in new situations that did not exist previously and see how they deal with it? When I watch this movie I see things that don't make sense or are out and out wrong but I am watching it for enjoyment, not to pick it apart. Besides, if you remember, the original series and subsequent movies were not ALL perfect or even good. Some season three episodes sucked more than a black hole and dare I mention "Star Trek V: The Abomination"?

I agree with Daze.... They stated VERY clearly in the movie that Nero changed the timeline.....Case closed!! It will never follow the original shows, books, or wishes of the 'True Trekkies' again..... It was a great movie for today, just as the Wrath of Khan was a great movie back then.......

I was a Trek fan from the beginning, but I have to say that I enjoyed the movie, as a fun departure, but, it does in fact clash. I can accept it as a fun alternative, if you decide to accept th premise that both realities can exist concurrently. Somtimes Trekkers in particular do tend to get a bit too serious on what is after all, fiction. In spite of the few differences, ie Amandas death, destruction of Vulcan, the illogical existance of two spocks in one time frame. It was fun to watch, And the players did a great job in the roles they were given. I for one would not want to be given the job of portraying characters so indelibly imprinted on the fans. Part of the movie experience is the old "willfull suspension of disbelief". I specially enjoyed all the 'easter eggs' on the DVD.

You are so wrong in the fact that this movie does not "clash" with the original. You are not a true trekkie if you do not see the many ways it does clash from the TV pilot through the whole series. You, as well as JJ Abrams really need to do home Star Trek Homework!

Unless I am mistaken, I SAID that it does clash. Of course, unless you're willing to read the WHOLE post, what can be expected? PS it's not 'trekkie' but trekker, and has been since the beginning. Trekkie is only used by those that disparage the real fans.

You're spot on Sean...the writing of the laudatory pieces is almost always five stars, uses the word "ROCKS!" repeatedly, similar phrasing, taunting of negative reviewers (who only comprise .02% of the total reviews), and usually if not always, the laudatory reviews never actually talk about plot elements, but just effusive praise. Nonsense.
