The original 1975 engagement for Smile was brief, and I can't figure out why. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Perhaps as a piercing satire of U.S. beauty pageants, it just seemed un-American. If you and your little brother ever made fun of the television pageants, this film is for you. Barbara Feldon shines as the uptight pageant director, and Bruce Dern likewise as the strait-laced chief pageant judge who finds out his son is part of a testosterone-hypercharged adolescent band of dressing-room voyeurs. I have no idea whether Denny's authorized its satirical association with this fictional pageant, but you'll never drive by a Denny's billboard without smiling after seeing this movie.
