In a way, this is kind of a re-launch of the series. It is a sort of explanation of WHY Bond is not irrelevant in this mean old world, BUT is also an explanation of why things can't go on as they were.
Same old Bond, but a promise of new heros and new villains, with new reasons for being evil or good. M is dead, long live M. a new Q, and even a new Moneypenny. The Aston-Martin is trotted out one last time and makes a heroic last stand fully equipped with ejector seats, and hidden machine guns.
As an action film, it's pretty good. The first half seems like a tired old retread of every Bond film ever made (maybe even a tad boring). I don't think that was an accident because it makes the last half all the sweeter both as an action film and as an exploration of the idea that somethings can change while other things stay the same.
Best Bond film in a while.
