in a society where everyone's attitude is all about being out for themselves,it's refreshing to see a movie which challenges that.we have two protagonists willie and sayra who are strangers to one another, but got their lives interwoven during the course of the movie.willie did the unthinkable for sayra.he does not know her but was compelled to save her life.maybe he saw a parallel earlier where he was helpless to save his girlfriend.maybe it was anger for being unable to come to his girlfriend's rescue that drove him to kill a fellow gang member.but whatever his reasons, willie saved sayra's life.unfortunately for him, that gallant effort meant an end to his.being a member of a notorious gang, willie has had his share of killing a rival gang member,so we expect his character to be callous and indifferent to the plight of others.but saving sayra from being raped and killed is so out of his character. willie may have done what he did out of resentment towards the gang member responsible for killing his girlfriend..being with a gang, everyone knows honor and loyalty is to be expected from its members.the gang is suppose to be your family or a representation of one.and anyone who betrays it has to pay the price.was willie thinking of the consequences to his actions?maybe not.maybe all he wanted was to avenge his girlfriend's death.and he could've done so(perhaps in another place and time)without saving sayra's life in the process.it just so happens that the opportunity presented itself.and willie was a better(or dead)man for it.everyone may surmise that sayra was an idiot to get off the train to follow willie.hey, call me hopeless romantic, but if a man saves my life like that, you bet your sweet derriere i would be committed to him for the rest of my life.how can you not love someone who put his life on the line for you?a man who doesn't care what everyone thinks because he knows he's doing it out of the goodness of his heart and also because he knows it to be true and most of all because it's the decent thing to do.a brave man who can stand up to others even if it means alienating the people who are supposed to be his "friends/family".alas!where does such a man exist?maybe cowardly men can learn a lesson or two on bravery from willie.in this day and age where women make almost the same amount of money as men, some of us still have the little red riding hood complex where we want to be rescued from the big,bad wolf.and sayra is no exception.she followed willie because she knew she would be safe with him,and understandably so,might have fallen for him too.and sayra was right in her decision to follow willie.her dad died on the way to the u.s.of a,,while her uncle was deported.sayra made it across the border through willlie's help.and with a last effort to be the knight in shining armor for sayra, willie gave the guy his digital camera as payment to have both him and sayra cross the river to america.this digital camera had mementoes of willie's dead girlfriend and the only remembrance of her that he has.he gave that up just so he can help sayra-a complete stranger he just so happen to meet.i know this is just a movie but there's something about doing good to help someone that really resonates with me.and more so,if in doing so,one has to defy the odds.that just makes the effort more bittersweet.the acting in the movie was excellent especially since most of them have no sufficient background for it.amateur actors are prone to histrionics.but not here probably because they were in the capable hands of a good director.great movie overall.
