Showgirls(1995)- User Reviews

You'll be sick of nudity by the end.

Showgirls is truthfully one of the worst movies I have ever seen, which isn't to say that it's not entertaining. I watched the damn thing twice, because everything about it is just so laughably bad, you can't help but give it a repeat viewing.
It helps that Showgirls is intentionally campy. Any movie that is this bad and is supposed to be serious doesn't deserve to be called a movie. The nudity in this film, for the record, is mind numbing. My second time through it, I tried counting all the T&A being flashed across the screen, and lost count somewhere in the upper sixties. The movie will make you sick of nudity, but you'll laugh your ass off getting there.
For the record, the plot (I'm being generous by saying there actually is one) is as follows: A gorgeous young nobody named Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkely-yes, Saved by the Bell Elizabeth Berkely) comes to Las Vegas to escape her mysterious past. Over the course of the film, she goes from a dancer in a sleazy club, to a full-fledged showgirl in a Vegas casino. Screenwriter Joe Esterhaus (or however you spell it) seems to forget about Nomi's past for most of the film, so the ending revelation comes kind of abruptly, making it all the more amusing.
Nomi's rise to stardom is hindered by bisexual showgirl queen Cristal (The lovely Gina Gershon) who has the job Nomi wants. She also has the man (Dune's Kyle MacClachlan) Nomi wants. For the record, MacChlachlan is annoying as hell in the part, and spends most of the movie staring at berkely's breasts. Not that there's anything wrong with that, because it was pretty much all I was doing too.
There's some scenes that are supposed to be tragic, like Cristal publically humiliating Nomi, or Nomi's best friend getting raped by a rock star (was he supposed to resemble Yanni?), but the movie is so horribly acted you can't feel sorry for the characters.
Overall, Showgirls is on par with daytime soap operas. The only difference is that there's nudity (Oh, and on soap operas women don't gyrate around like dying fish when they're having sex-Nomi does) and lots of it.
But the movie was intentionally bad, so I'm going to go easy and give it a C.
Bonus: The scene where Nomi goes to a showgirl audition and she (along with all the other girls) is harassed by the director is probably the funniest dman thing I've seen in a long time.
