Etienne, happily married to his wife Clémence, is about to take over from his father-in-law as the head of an industrial company that makes cleaning products, but his chance meeting with childhood friend Patrick turns everything upside down. Etienne confesses to him that he owes the rapid rise of his career to the fact that, 12 years previously, he stole the formula for a stain remover sent by Michelet, a humble and lonely chemist. Patrick encourages Etienne to ease his conscience by finding Michelet and repaying him. But things go awry when Patrick kills Michelet and persuades Etienne not to go to the police. Although Etienne tries to continue life as usual, it gradually turns into a nightmare. Harassed by Patrick, under investigation by the police and misunderstood by Clémence, Etienne falls under the spell of Michelet's daughter, Fleur.
