Totally agree with "wordplay2" that the script seemed like a mess because it couldn't find footing between comedy or social commentary (a really shallow one). The trailer made me think it was going to be FUNNY! I enjoyed the last 20 minutes more than the entire beginning and middle. At least stuff HAPPENED. You could start 3/4 of the way into this film and you wouldn't have missed anything important.

I thoroughly enjoyed this charming movie; it lifted my spirits and I'm grateful for it. All the main actors nailed their roles wonderfully. The story was full of subtle humor and thought provoking moments. Yes, in rare instances it was a bit cliche but who cares when the vast majority of the movie was not. Anyone who doesn't like this movie lacks class and has their head up their arse.

Does anyone have a problem with the ecology factor in this movie? Call me a tree hugger, but I don't see anyone having a problem with introducing a non-native fish to an area. There are countless horror stories that enviormentalists are dealing with from such actions. Yellowstone Park has dealt with an evasive plant that someone years ago brought in just to decorate tables! I could go on and on on about situations that have taken place on someone's actions such as this. Just because the guy had money in this movie does not make it right!

Randi - there are some VERY IMPORTANT distinctions between what you're advocating and what happened in the movie.

For starters - the river doesn't exist without the sheik. He's not populating an existing ecosystem with fish. He was creating an ecosystem and then adding the fish.

Second - the ecosystem he created was a closed system. The salmon went from their holding tanks and then swam 5 miles to another holding station. The only way these fish would leave the system would be to go to the dinner table.

It is a film and the symbolism is far more important than the reality of the film. You need to look beyond the actual story.

Had been seeing all the wonderful reviews on television so had to see this movie. It was funny and sad and sweet all at the same time. Loved Ewan McGregor! Yes, "faith" is an important part.

Hunter, you raise some interesting points about open and closed ecosystems. Since this film was based on a work of fiction it allows the author and director to create what is essentially a set of tanks that looks like a river. Plenty of theme parks around the world do the same thing. We can speculate what could happen if this had been an actual river (open ecosystem) or that salmon fingerlings were moved to other riparian systems in the area. But for now I am glad this is just a work of fiction.
