The premise of the movie hardly prepares you for this deeply-felt, original movie by newcomer Mark Duplass--the star and executive producer of this amazing movie. There are cameos which actually pack a wallop, by well known comedian Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiam, etc.) as the father to the female lead in this movie, Darius, played wonderfully by Aubrey Plaza. Kristin Bell is made up to look the faded head cheerleader-type, Belinda.
The characters in this movie all evolve, all face a set of unique challenge and each respond with varying degrees of good decisions, poor decisions, or with bafflement--like real humans. I particularly credit the actor playing Jeff, the putative article writer mentoring two interns hot on a developing story.
I was moved in many places, and I did nor feel manipulated, such as in a Terms of Endearmenrt obvious-plot-device and mother-child drama. This surprising movie will succeed by word of mouth. It is the best thing I've seen since The Artist, in terms of originality, fresh, distinct characters, wonderful acting by newcomers.
Do yourself a favor and see this film, which I expect to want to see again.
