Outstanding acting, directing and cinemaphotographic presentation of an edgy, harsh, ugly but realistic story. My only complaint is that the overuse of period music is a distraction. Jason Patrick's, Jennifer Jason Leigh's,and especially Max Perlich's (Dooley in Blow),performances were absolutely stellar. Sam Elliot was, well...Sam Elliot, and that ain't bad.
Whoever the guy was that played the black heroin dealer was, I have to remind myself that he was just acting! Gregg Allman's stoic quiet menace as the "bad guy" was perfect, as was the fundamentalist Acting-Chief of Police. This isn't a happy movie, nor is it entertaining. It is an accurate portail of real circumstances.
