Sylvester Stallone wrote his own ticket with this cinematic classic. The first installment in an amazing series of 5 and probably it's best. Stallone made himself into a hero as "Rocky Balboa," a has-been street boxer who only fought for ends meat in small bouts even though with the proper motivation he could have been a champion. Life is complacent for Balboa as he works as a henchman and boxes every now and then, lives in his trashy apartment, and pursues the simple life. Things change as Apollo Creed, world champion decides to give a local fighter a shot at the title for publicity. Sure enough, Rocky gets the call. Things really start moving now, as Rocky's manager Mickey, Rocky's girlfriend Adrian, and her drunk brother Paulie all effect Rocky's life on his quest for the belt. The cast couldn't have been better for this movie. Merideth Burgess as Mickey, is the perfect old manager with a snarl. Talia Shire as Adrian, plays the shy girl coming out of her shell to a T. Her brother Paulie is amazing in his part of the angry friend. Carl Weathers is great as the cocky, energetic, win at all costs boxing champ, Apollo Creed. The supporting cast all does it's job triumphantly also. One of the best things of the Rocky series is the music. Eye of the Tiger comes to mind as well as the rest of the motivational rock n' jock music that makes you want to jump up and start shadow boxing, and doing one handed pushups. This is a funny and dramatic movie where you'll feel like you know and love the characters and empathize with all of them. The idea of writing yourself into your own hit movie was popularized here, it was given credit by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as the reason they wrote the Academy Award winning screenplay "Good Will Hunting," and started their Project Greenlight due to it. Definitely the best sports series ever made, and boxing movie ever made. Some may say that Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" is the best in the genre, and it is great but you'll never get tired of watching Rocky over and over again. Yo Adrian!
