I'm glad that studios have realized lately how important it is to put aside the snarky comments and pop culture references and embrace the heartwarming, sometimes cheesy honesty of children's movies. This movie does exactly that, and it's not really a surprise anymore, given what Dreamworks has released in the past couple years (see How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Megamind).
Rise of the Guardians has a bit of a shaky plot at times, but that's easily forgiven when you see that the movie relies more on learning about the main cast and the world around them. The character designs are very striking and unique, and each one has his or her own purpose and motivation for being a Guardian.
There are a lot of action scenes, and they're very fluid, showcasing each character's unique talents. The studio really shows how far it's come in the past decade of CGI; the effects of the sand and frost are simply breathtaking.
Sometimes the characters state things that might have been better to let the audience infer, but it does make it more accessible for the younger audience to understand the main conflicts in the movie, how Jack is very much like the villain Pitch (the boogeyman) in that they're both longing to be believed in.
Overall, it's a great film that takes an enjoyable twist on well-known "icons" and provides a lot of action, beautiful animation, and both heartbreaking and heartwarming moments.
