Red Tails(2012)- User Reviews

Blithely fantastic...

star55

As a whole, the movie hit the mark with following the guidelines that the history of United States has set for the Tuskegee pilots. Lucasfilm makes a point of covering the major big and occasionally little conflicts, adding depth to the plot in the way that, as a viewer, is able to be seen as a truer look than if one looked at a short summary of the whole of the Tuskegee Experiment.

The only problem with it was that it did not cover ALL of what the Red Tails went through - but then again, this film is only a two hour movie, not a true and complete documentary. It isn't History Channel or a history book, but it is something notable in the way that George Lucas handles the history laid in front of him.

Otherwise, the movie mixed the dramatic and the historical in a very convincing way, thrusting the viewer into a world not often looked upon in modern media today.

On another note, the acting was brilliant - almost cheesy, but absolutely lovable and enthralling in the way that all the actors seem like 'real' men. The actors were positively believable, and I would love to see them in other films as well.

I can't wait for George Lucas to cover something else that is historical. I'm not a big fan of Star Wars - but I AM a big fan of history.

I'm a bigger fan of people who can actually do it right and the way it does history some justice.

Thank you, Dr. Jabulani, for your sharing your personal story with us about your heroic father. I want to take my father, age 89, and a veteran of WWII and the Korean War to watch your father's movie. My dad could not be a pilot in WWII but he vicariously lives through your father's efforts and bravery. Thank you and how proud you must be to be his son! He and countless other African American men and women continue to allow me to enjoy the freedom to this day. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for everything and I lift you up with the deepest respect and honor.

To the White Pilot of the USAF- First, thank you for your contribution to All Americans!! Second, obviously you are not familiar with the African-American culture during that era. Thirdly, "Red Tails" IS NOT from the White prospective. That story has been told numerous of times. This movie was to tell the Tuskegee Airmen's story and their heroics contributions to the U.S. My hope is that we all learn something and learn to appreciate all who serve our country!!

I was thinking of seeing this movie. I love history and this seems to fit the bill. I see a lot of flaming and just outright stupid behavior on these comments. My opinion; These and all men and women who fought then, in the past, and now, are great. Had these men been given the same attitude, same training, same conditions from the onset of the war, would they have had as great of results as others through the war? Be careful not to judge harshly ay man or woman whose life was on the line!

Any one who fights for America deserves our respect and admiration. Blood is red no matter what color skin God happens to have given the warrior. This was a sad period in America. Its just sad that the majority of Black Americans don't understand that it was President Wilson (Democrat) who re-segregated the military. That's correct, the US military had already been unsegregated until President Wilson. It was President Eisenhower (Republican) who re-unsegregated (bushism sorry) the military. We need to read more about this struggle and understand all sides of this issue.

Every Thursday, I accompany my father to a meeting at the VA of X-POW's, mostly from WW2. It is literally a room full of hero's that I have the honor to listen to every week. Though my Dad was in the infantry, a totally different type of hell, the vast majority of them seem to be from bombers. After hearing what it was like to sit in a bomber on a mission over Germany, I can't imagine anyone doing it a second time. These guys did it over and over again until they finally got shot down. I am proud to know these men.

I'm a 63 tr. old Vietnam Vet. F.Troop,17th. Cav 196 lt. Inf Brigade, LZ Baldy. HHQ Chu Lai RVN. This is an American story. To all you haters. What have YOU done for your country lately? When is the last time YOU faced down death? Would YOU put your life in danger for your best friend, or your blood brother? What's keeping YOU from joining up and fighting for YOUR country. I'm waiting for answers.

Why don't you ask that of those who created and perpetuated these differences for so many generations. Would you have been as critical of those who segregated the military? I don't see that in your commentary. I doubt you would have had the courage to do so. Certainly you don't have the courage and dignity demonstrated by those who were treated as less than human yet cared enough about being AMERICANS to fight for their country anyway. Coincidentally, as I write this, I have just finished a visit with a man who served in that segregated military and remembers it, and other elements of a segregated life in this nation. This was not so long ago.

America is full of greatness and ugliness. It is a paradox that we may struggle with for generations to come. Your argument is with America, warts and all. You are part of that America. I wonder how familiar you are with its true history, My guess is that you are too lazy to learn it. MINORITY CRAP! Those men were/are Americans. Just ask the Axis soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought against them.

Well, you can keep on watching "Triumph of the Will", and root for your heroes if you can't stand that Black people contributed to freeing the world from a horrible menace. History is what it is and whether you like it or not, you story is only a small part.

Thanks for the remake (Tuskegee Airmen). Please support this movie and all of our heritage. For those of you who don't know, a lot of our heritage has been lost or hidden in history. If we don't support our own heritage, how can we expect anyone else to?

Just saw the movie and for those who want to nit pick every detail, now hear this: Enjoyed the movie and understand how difficult it was for them, fighting the enemy abroad and at home. Had it not been for Eleanor Roosevelt they were overlooked for everything, until she got involved. I'm a Viet Nam vet, and a retired VA employee who had the honor and privilege of spending a little time with one. At 90 his mind was sharp as ever and you knew he was special just by the way he carried himself. And I believe they escorted the B-17 "Flying Fortress" safely, without a loss. Finally, go nit pick all the wanna be Rambo's, etc. I salute those gallant warriors.

I think all your comments are insulting. First of this movies was no way intended to say that Black Pilots are better than White Pilots, so all of you can get off your racist high horse. This movie was intended to show how the war was fought from their side. Yeah it may not be 100 % correct and maybe 10% of it was correct. If you feel you know the "Real Truth", then keep it to yourself. For all those that were "Mad at the Blacks for Talking Jive" How do you know they were or weren't were you there? If you had Family that were part of the 332, ask them about it. Don't go around bashing a pretty good action movie with doing your home work. I've read the books, meet the Surviving Tuskegee Airmen, and I myself am a Member of the USAF, and yes I'm black. And i find that both Black and Whites did their part back in history against Germany to help end the war. I'm prepared for any type of criticism and name calling (if your mindset is on that level). Maybe you disappointed that a White Man ( Lucas) put effort into making a black movie lead by a Black Cast, Which Hollywood wouldn't give two thoughts about it, who preferred that the cast not be all black.
The point I'm trying to make is this: Every movie you watched that was "referenced to History or inspired by a true story" , is always going to match your level of "research" and the "truth you know" about how the Tuskegee. If you feel this is wrong on every "level", Why not get your paper and pen out, create your version of the truth, put all your hard earned dime in to it. Then have Hollywood try to produce it. Until then give credit to where it was due, It was a Great Movie. If you are still stuck on the fact of how the black men were talking back then, and stuck on the fact that the movies shows the blacks taking credit for how the war was won, then you have a of issues in your life you need to deal with.. God Bless!!

Fairly well said Dj! It's nice to see there are people out here that know what the true score of things are so to speak. It's a danged shame that some only look at color to judge a person and it's also a shame that some way overplay the race card so it's a 2 edged sword. I just pray that someday we all get to the point where we see that it's the content of character of the individual is what makes the difference. not skin color. Anyway, I admire the courage and bravery of all airmen and all servicemen and women. These guys just deserve a little more respect because of the crap they put up with back in the day and still turned out to be a great unit in spite of what everyone else with their prejudices thought.

This movie was inaccurate and pretty much sucked all around. It is just another typical hollywood sensationalized movie intended to stir up old racial feelings and make it look like some black pilots single handedly won WWII for America. Yeah, let's forget about Italian-Americans giving the biggest sacrifice out of any ethnic group during the war. Why can't they make a movie about that? I guess George Lucas felt like re-writing Star Wars wasn't enough so he decided to re-write history too. What a joke
    • Monet K 3 months ago
I don't think it made it look like some black pilots single handedly won WWII for America, however it does tell the story or African Americans that were in the war and what they endured. I like your point about the sacrifice of the Italian-Americans, they should make a movie about that fact. I think they should make movies that tell the true story and not glorify one race. As we know there were many different races that partake in these wars and helped win the war for America. I also believe all of them have their own stories to tell.

      JLM2010 • Waco, Texas:
Hollywood decided long ago that Italians invented crime. In order for a movie about Italians to be profitable they would disregard the fact that the largest ethnic contingency to give their lives in WW II were Americans of Italian ethnicity. Hence we have films about the Godfather rather than the contributions of men like the following:

Basilone, John - The man General Douglas Mac Arthur called, “a one man army” is killed during the landing at Iwo Jima. Basilone becomes the only man in the history of the United States to win the two highest military honors: The Congressional Medal of Honor from the Marines for his virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment on Guadalcanal, and the Navy Cross for valor during the landing at Iwo Jima.

Casamento, Anthony - Jimmy Carter awards a belated Medal of Honor to Anthony Casamento, age 60, at a White House ceremony. The citation reads in part: “Despite the heat and ferocity of the engagement, he repeatedly repulsed multiple assaults by the enemy forces.” (Guadalcanal 1942) All 30 Marines in the two squads were hit by machine gun fire and 27 died. Corporal Casamento, age 22, was hit 14 times. Though grievously wounded he returns fire with the left hand and stops the blood flow from a throat wound with a shattered right hand.

Gentile, Don - America’s leading ace in WW II. He is credited with shooting down 30 Nazi warplanes.

It's not fashionable to be a son or a daughter of Italy in Hollywood unless of course your name happens to be Capone or Luciano.

One final thought. Throughout history the obvious has been recorded but I submit to you history has a way of disguising veracity. In the 18th century, Philip Mazzei, a founding father and an Italian import gave America the base for its credo. It was he, not Thomas Jefferson who is attributed with the words:
      “All men are created equal.”

I went 2 see this movie tonite, and in my humble opinion, it was too long. I loved the first movie, the tuskeegee airmen and I think that movie told the story well the first time. This movie, red tails, seems to be an attempt by the directors to tell the parts of the story that he felt was missing in the first episode. Either way, he did well, the first time, and the story line was a bit redunant for me. I was ready after the first 30mins. Its a good movie mind u so if you have to time, go watch it..

I rather recently had the personal privilege of spending some time talking with a professional educator who recently retired after 50+ years as an educator and Dean at various colleges.. the last, if I remember correctly, where for 17 years he was a Dean in Wash. DC . He became a Tuskeegee Airman in his late teens at a time when all of America was doing their part in WWII. According to him, the really "true" story is yet to be told, but will soon be published by a fellow Tuskeegee airman and available in book stores. I've not seen "Red Tails" which is at least the 2nd movie produced about the 332nd yet I plan to very soon with full expectation that the movie was produced moreso to make money rather than tell the true story. I anxiously await the publishers delivery of the "real story" of the Tuskeegee airmen, who like many others unselfishly gave their "all" for our Country in the constant fight for Freedom.

if this movie was about drug dealing .cleaning toilets, car jacking, it wouldn't matter if the movie was poorly made ,it was truth, and protrayed some of the prejudice that some of our black brothers had to endure just to fight for our -opps your country.

OK..I have read a lot of WWII history and there are several points that many readers of this article are missing. 1) The job of fighter escorts were to ESCORT the bombers during their mission and according to history the Red Tails did their job, 2) many of America's aces achieved their status during fighter sweeps, where the fighters actually went up looking for Axis fighters to engage and 3) who gives a rat's A@* if the Red Tails produced any aces as long as their goal of reducing the number of bombers lost was achieved.

Hey Conrad, I am just a "Dumb White Female" Baby Boomer but even I get the differnce between Fighter Pilots and Fighter Escorts. Escorts were more about being the extra pair of eyes instead of The Kills.
