This is a kid's movie, plain and simple. If you're 14 - biologically or intellectually - you'll probably like it. For anyone with an adult mentality who is looking for something more than 2-dimensional (or at times, even 1-dimensional), the contrived and just plain stupid plot mechanisms and characterizations, not to mention the totally formulaic plot, will render it ridiculous.
If it had been billed as a kid's movie, I would have given it 3 or *maybe* 4 stars (doesn't even come close to, say, The Iron Giant). But it wasn't. Guess that tells us what moguls like Spielberg think of the movie-going public. Sadly, based on most of the user reviews I've seen, Spielberg's take is an accurate one.
