Attention to details makes this a very good movie

Pixar is getting better and better. I already liked many of their previous features, in particular "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo", but this one relly won me over more than any of their previous creations. It is hilariously funny at times, while at others quite a bit contemplative (how to understand where you belong... is a rat always a rat, or can it rise to become more?)

What really won me over is the meticulous attention to details, from the stunningly life-like decor of Paris above and below ground, to the believable facial expressions (actually the rats seem more human than the more cartoonish "real" human characters), to the movements given to all protagonists. I found myself thinking of some of the best Buster Keaton movies of old, and that was someone who knew how to use movement!

Sometimes the camera zooms in so close that you're afraid the illusion will shatter and you'll figure out it's a computer-created world, but the rendering is so meticulous this never happened for me. I was completely taken in by the universe that the long list of contributors have created. I tip my hat to the attention to details that is so often lacking in movie-making these days.

Oh, and what a treat to have Peter O'Toole be the voice of the fussy restaursaant critic that is the looming menace over the whole story...

And besides, when is the last time you almost salivated at seeing "pretend food" being prepared? I'd patronize whatever establishment this gifted rat would bestow his chef's gifts about. In fact, I wish there was one in my town.
